Weekend Getaways – Family Friendly Holidays in Ahungalla, Sri Lanka

Families traveling to Sri Lanka on a quest for adventure and excitement are in for a range of activities and surprises. Ahungalla is located on the southern coast of the island and is a great destination for families, as it offers experiences from wildlife excursions and water sports to historical tours and beach trips.

Aavya Beach

Working on your summer glow can be quite hard, especially with your little ones running around the beach. Aavya beach offers a golden stretch of coastline that’s perfect for building sand castles. Challenge your kids to build the biggest sandcastle while you bask under the warmth of the island sun. Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen, in addition to packing your beach bag with sun hats, beach towels, flip-flops and plenty of buckets and spades to build sandcastles with!

Watersports

For a bit of excitement and adrenaline, there are a plethora of water sports available from jet skis to banana boats and tube rides. These activities are great for families traveling with young children, as it calls for endless thrilling screams and unstoppable laughter. Located in Bentota; the water sports hub, this southern coastal village is approximately 30 minutes away from Aavya Cove. Some of the other activities to partake in are water skiing, wakeboarding, snorkeling, deep sea fishing and riverboat rides through lush mangroves.

Wildlife Excursions

The island is blessed with 26 national parks, each with its own special feature. Yala National Park is known to be the best place to spot wild leopards and sloth bears, while Minneriya National Park is famed for The Gathering; the largest meeting of wild elephants and Kumana National Park is a haven for bird watchers. Venture into the depths of the Indian Ocean for a chance to spot the largest animal in the world, the blue whale, as well as other marine animals from sperm whales to dolphins and sea turtles.

Historical Tours

Dive into the historical wonder of Sri Lanka by embarking on a fascinating heritage tour. Galle is located an hour away from Aavya Cove and offers a range of things to see. Visit the towering Galle Lighthouse and Clocktower situated on either end of Dutch Fort ramparts. Steeped in history, you can even take your kids into the National Maritime Museum for a fun and engaging learning experience of the island’s history.
