About AAHAASA

Infinite Horizons. Transformative Journeys. Rooted in Nature.

AAHAASA is a philosophy of elevation, rooted in nature, shaped by culture, and guided by purpose, setting a new standard beyond boutique and five star hotels in Sri Lanka and globally.

Founded on the belief that hospitality should transform rather than impress, AAHAASA blends Sri Lankan warmth with global refinement. Each retreat is designed to foster peace, wellness, and meaningful connection, creating journeys that linger long after departure.

Introduction

A Philosophy, Not Just a Collection

AAHAASA is a Sri Lankan boutique hospitality brand shaped by landscape, emotion, and intention.

More than a collection of retreats, AAHAASA is a way of being, one that honours stillness over spectacle, meaning over excess, and presence over performance.

Each sanctuary within the AAHAASA Collection is designed as a transformative journey, guided by nature’s rhythm and rooted in Sri Lanka’s cultural soul. From mist-laced mountains to sheltered coves and rolling tea hills, AAHAASA invites guests to slow down, reconnect, and rise into new perspective.

Our Story

From a Family Dream to a Brand With Purpose

The story of AAHAASA begins long before it had a name.

In 2017, what started as a deeply personal family dream, rooted in memory, heritage, and a desire to give back, took physical form in Sri Lanka’s central hills. Australian-Sri Lankan architect Nath Rankothge, together with his father Lal Rankothge, an environmentalist, and his uncle K.R.G. Wijesundara, a respected Sri Lankan businessman and philanthropist, set out to create something meaningful on the land that had shaped their lives.

The first step was a simple holiday home, Nisala Villa Kandy, in Lal’s childhood village. Designed by Nath and built by local villagers, many of whom were trained and empowered through the process, the project became a lesson in handcrafted quality, humility, and community-led creation. Under Nath and Lal’s guidance, the team developed a deep respect for craft, land stewardship, and quiet excellence.

This ethos evolved into Aarunya Nature Resort, a mountain sanctuary “where mist meets mountain and soul meets silence.” Aarunya was never intended to be just a hotel. It was a place of awakening, where architecture, wellness, cuisine, and nature converged to create moments of meaning, presence, and peace. Aarunya became the foundation of what would later emerge as AAHAASA.

The Collection

The Birth of AAHAASA

Following the success of Aarunya, Nath envisioned a broader framework – one that could carry this philosophy across landscapes while preserving its emotional depth.

In 2025, AAHAASA Collection was formally established. The name AAHAASA, meaning “to the sky” in Sinhala, reflects the brand’s guiding belief: that travel, when done with intention, has the power to elevate the mind, body, and soul.

Its emblem, three ascending, cocoon-like lines, symbolises protection, growth, and upward transformation, representing the interconnected journeys of body, mind, and spirit.

AAHAASA was conceived as a circuit of soulful sanctuaries, each interpreting the brand philosophy through its own landscape, culture, and rhythm, awakening, renewal, and reflection.

The Experience

The AAHAASA Experience Philosophy

AAHAASA extends beyond destinations into a living philosophy expressed through a constellation of experiences and guiding pillars.

Across every property, these experiences are unified through AAHAASA’s poetic “Aa…” language, with each name carrying cultural and symbolic meaning rooted in Sri Lanka’s heritage. While consistent in intent, each experience is interpreted uniquely, allowing every destination to express its own sense of place.

Guests may begin their journey with Aarambha, the ritual of arrival; restore balance through Aarogya, AAHAASA’s holistic wellness philosophy; explore cuisine and storytelling through Aahaara; or gather under the elemental warmth of Aaloka. These experiences form emotional gateways into each retreat’s transformative arc.

Supporting this ecosystem are AAHAASA’s guiding pillars:

  • Aayusha, the brand’s regenerative sustainability and community initiative
  • Aarivya, its experiential learning and cultural immersion programme

Together, they ensure that every stay nourishes not only the guest, but also the land and communities that host them.

The Initial Collection

Three Journeys, One Philosophy

AarunyaThe Awakening Journey

Set within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle near Kandy, Aarunya Nature Resort is a mountain sanctuary defined by elevation and perspective. Celestial-aligned villas open to mist-laden vistas of the Knuckles Mountains, where each sunrise symbolises renewal and new beginnings.

Here, AAHAASA’s experiential, conscious and regenerative travel philosophy was developed through estate-to-table cuisine, immersive wellness rooted in Ayurveda and spice traditions, and architecture that honours silence, light, and craft.

AavyaThe Restorative Journey

Located along Sri Lanka’s southwest coast near Galle, Aavya Cove Villas embodies renewal through rhythm. Nestled within a naturally sheltered cove, this barefoot coastal sanctuary balances tropical modernist design with oceanic calm.

From firelit beach dining to coastal wellness rituals infused with citrus and sea salt, Aavya invites guests to release, restore, and realign with nature’s flow.

AadyaThe Reflective Journey

Located in Sri Lanka’s tea country near Hatton, Aadya Tea Bungalows completes the arc of AAHAASA’s journeys. Set within a rehabilitated 200-acre tea estate, Aadya is a place of stillness, grace, and rediscovery.

Private bungalows, appu-style service, estate-driven dining, and a meandering golf course invite guests into reflection, where heritage, land, and community coexist in quiet harmony.

Founder

Nath Rankothge

Founder Nath Rankothge is an Australian-Sri Lankan architect whose global experience spans New York, London, Shanghai, Sydney, and Colombo. His work is defined by a sensitivity to place, material honesty, and emotional design.

Guided by both architectural precision and cultural intuition, Nath leads AAHAASA with a vision to elevate Sri Lankan hospitality onto the world stage, without losing its soul. His approach blends international sensibility with deep local engagement, ensuring that every AAHAASA sanctuary is globally relevant, contemporary and unmistakably of its place.

“We envision AAHAASA not as performance, but as presence – a way of being that honours both guest and place.”

Sustainability

A Responsibility, Not an Initiative

At AAHAASA, sustainability is not a trend – it is a responsibility.

Through Aayusha, AAHAASA’s regenerative travel initiative, the brand actively engages in community empowerment, conservation, education, and biodiversity protection. Initiatives include reforestation, sustainable agriculture, artisan partnerships, coastal conservation, and the rehabilitation of a landmark 200-acre tea estate.

Aayusha will be headquartered at the forthcoming Aarunya Nature Pavilion, a bamboo research and education space dedicated to spice cultivation, ecological study, and community learning.

Every stay supports a living cycle of giving back – to nature, neighbours, and future generations.

What Future Awaits

The Next Horizon

As AAHAASA evolves, each future sanctuary will introduce a new mode of transformation shaped by its environment, wellness and culture.

Beyond Sri Lanka, the brand is exploring destinations that embody grounding, celebration, and connection – while preserving AAHAASA’s defining ethos of harmony, refinement, and emotional depth.

From ocean journeys with Aamudra, to branded residences and private travel experiences, AAHAASA’s horizon continues to expand, carrying the spirit of Sri Lankan soulful hospitality to the world.

At AAHAASA, luxury is not extravagance – it is presence.

Every detail is intentional. Every experience is rooted in place. Every journey is an invitation to reconnect – with nature, with culture, and with oneself.

This is AAHAASA.
A collection of sanctuaries.
A philosophy of elevation.
A love letter to Sri Lanka.
