Aarunya Nature Resort – an AAHAASA Collection flagship recently named to TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026 – has launched its Nature Pavilion, a dedicated hub for ecological research, conservation, and guest education.
Set within Aarunya‘s biodiversity-rich landscape overlooking the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Mountain Range and Conservation Forest, the Pavilion serves three functions: a research facility, a tea and spice production centre, and an interpretive space bridging academic study with guest engagement – positioning Aarunya at the forefront of regenerative tourism in South Asia.
The Pavilion will host researchers, naturalists, and university partners – including academic institutions, government bodies, and biodynamic specialists – to study endemic flora and fauna, support conservation initiatives such as habitat creation for critically endangered species, and contribute to Sri Lanka’s environmental knowledge base.
Handcrafted using locally sourced bamboo, mud bricks, and lime-free natural renders, the build took nearly two years, shaped by limited local expertise in bamboo construction. Co-founder and architect Nath Rankothge and the Aarunya team researched techniques, worked with international experts, and sourced bamboo locally in Kandy, refining treatment methods along the way.
“At Aarunya, sustainability is not a program; it is the foundation of everything we do and a constantly evolving pursuit… The Nature Pavilion represents a natural evolution of our ethos, creating a space where design, science, education, and hospitality intersect to protect and celebrate the extraordinary ecosystems that surround us,” said Rankothge.
He also noted the building’s imperfect finish is intentional: “The minor imperfections in the structure and finishing are welcomed as a testament to the process and the challenges we faced.”
Beyond research, the Pavilion supports guided nature trails, birdwatching, and biodynamic agricultural experiences. Guests can further engage with Sri Lanka’s spice heritage through working gardens, foraging, and culinary and wellness experiences rooted in local tradition – reflecting a wider shift among high-end resorts toward actively restoring ecosystems rather than simply minimizing impact.
